A very popular tool that our doulas use is aromatherapy. Not just for yummy smells, there are numerous studies that provide evidence to support the use of essential oils to relieve nausea during pregnancy, ease labor pains, and support postpartum recovery. Studies have even shown that using aromatherapy can help boost serotonin and other helpful hormones.

Here are some of my favorite oils to use during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum:

  1. Peppermint Oil: Mmmm, minty... Who doesn't love this fresh smell? Inhalation of this pleasant-smelling oil can ease pain, nausea, and dizziness during pregnancy and labor.

  2. Lavender Oil: Lavender is very well-known for its promotion relaxation and eases muscle tension. While pregnant, try adding a few drops to your bathwater or diffuse in your bedroom during bedtime. Great as a massage oil during labor.

  3. Frankincense Oil: A wonderful oil used for therapeutic purposes around the world. Frankincense essential oil assists emotional calm through inhalation. While massaging the lower back or rubbing the abdomen with this oil has been used in many cultures to ease labor discomfort.

  4. Jasmine Oil: A floral essential oil used to evoke feelings of self-confidence, peace and joy. Can also be used as a massage oil.

  5. Clary Sage Oil: Many doulas use on acupressure points to induce more effective contractions and aid the labor process. Traditionally is also used to soothe period pain and menopause symptoms. Effective in a diffuser or in a massage oil.

  6. Sweet Orange Oil: An refreshing scent used during labor to provide an energy boost and uplift mood.

Some other essential oils that are popular for use in childbirth and recovery include: ylang ylang, bergamot, ginger, rose, and clove.

Hello and Congratulations on growing your family!

I am so glad to meet you and can't wait to learn more about you.

Who are I?

I am a motivated, trained, compassionate doula building a project to improve reproductive conditions through education, advocacy and support. The Divine Mama Doula Project is born out of the need for a comprehensive doula package available to Medi-Cal recipients. I intend to build a DOULA COLLECTIVE that will eventually become a BIRTH COLLECTIVE providing a wide variety of services to local families.

My goal is to connect, serve, and improve families' living conditions through improving their birthing conditions.

HOWEVER,

This is a ULTIMATELY project where doulas, providers, and families ALL grow and learn together-- because this OUR project! As a participant, you help to advance this into a thriving and dynamic experience for us all.

So reach out and engage!

That is EXACTLY what I am here for.

Doula Vocheri Marlo Thomas
